Knot density Knot density is a traditional measure for quality of handmade or knotted carpets and rugs. It refers to the number of knots, or knot count, per unit of surface area or length – typically either per square inch (kpsi) or per square centimeter (kpsc), or per 7 centimeters (Raj, Persian knot density unit). Number of knots per unit area is directly proportional to the quality of carpet.

80≤ knot density≤120    kpsi is poor quality

13≤ knot density≤18     kpsc is poor quality

25≤ knot density≤30      Raj is poor quality

120≤ knot density≤330  kpsi is medium to good quality

18≤ knot density≤51      kpsc is medium to good quality

30≤ knot density≤50      Raj is medium to good quality

330≤ knot density≤1066 kpsi is very good to high quality

51≤ knot density≤165    kpsc is very good to high quality

50≤ knot density≤90      Raj is very good to high quality
